Breed them to run... Breed them to win

Tampa Players Enjoy a Fine Wine Bottle

Wine Bottle showed a great deal of promise for trainer/co-owner Robert Smith when she finished second at odds of 6-1 in her debut at Gulfstream Park on May 30. So it was no surprise when she was bet down to 6/5 yesterday for her second start at Tampa Bay Downs, a race originally scheduled for the turf but switched to five furlongs on the main track.

The 3-year-old daughter of Drill disputed the pace down the backstretch while three wide under Raul Mena, then took the lead with a strong move on the turn and drew off down the lane to score by five lengths. Wine Bottle was clocked in :59.50 and paid $4.40 while becoming the 17th winner this year for her second-crop sire, whose progeny earnings jumped to $458,198.
