What better name could there be for a Get Away Farm homebred filly by Two Step Salsa than Homemade Salsa, who turned in a highly professional performance to break her maiden in her career debut at Gulfstream Park yesterday. Homemade Salsa broke from the No. 6 post under red-hot Tyler Gaffalione in the $40,000 maiden special at 5 1/2 furlongs and tracked the leaders in fourth place through a quarter in :22.36 seconds. Tyler moved the filly to the outside on the turn and Homemade Salsa was easily best inside the eighth pole, cruising to a two-length victory in 1:04.21. Homemade Salsa became winner No. 36 for her sire and it was worth $24,000 for Get Away Farm, along with the breeder's award. The filly is the sixth winner for the Pioneering mare Homesteader. Her full brother, Conquest Two Step, captured the Gr. II Palos Verdes Stakes and earned $339,408, and her half-brother, Sheikh of Sheikhs, is a graded stakes-placed earner of $147,752.
With $969,581 in progeny earnings, Two Step Salsa is on the cusp of surpassing the $1 million mark, and with several strong runners slated for action today and tomorrow, including Two Step Time in the $75,000 Eight Miles East Stakes at Gulfstream, it could happen before the weekend ends.
