El Salsero is at it again. Two Step Salsa's Puerto Rican star fell a neck short in the Gr. II, $53,140 Antonio Mongil Jr. Stakes at muddy Camarero Race Track on Aug. 19. The 3-year-old colt with the perfect in-the-money record kept that record intact after leading every step of the way but the last in the 1 1/8th-mile race.
El Salsero collected $10,628 a he raised his career earnings to $146,594, on a record of 8-4-2 in 14 starts. At odds of 6-1, he finished nearly nine lengths ahead of third-place Regalada, the 1/2 favorite. El Salsero has competed in six graded stakes and compiled a record of 2-3-1.
At Gulfstream Park, perennial front-runner Maddy's Salsa did what she does best, leading all the way in a one-mile race on the grass. Leaving from the difficult No. 12 post with Nik Juarez aboard, the 3-year-old filly never gave up the lead, scoring by one length and collecting $12,200 for owner/breeder Dennis J. Federico. Two Step Salsa's 2018 progeny earnings have surpassed $1.5 million, and he's closing in on $9 million lifetime.
