El Salsero kept his perfect in-the-money record intact this week with a game second-place finish in the $72,178, Gr. I Copa San Juan Stakes at Camarero Race Track Puerto Rico. The 3-year-old son of Two Step Salsa is now 7-3-2 for 12 starts over two seasons and 2-3-2 for seven starts in 2018. The $14,720 check for his latest effort increased his total to $129,096.
The Copa San Juan is the third recent Gr. I in which El Salsero has faced two sharp rivals, Regalado and Amigojulioforti and Edwin Castro sent his colt right to the lead in the 1 3/16-mile race, as he has done in the past. This time, El Salsero was able to dispose of the latter, then succumbed in deep stretch to Regalado, who was sent off at 2/5.
Two Step Salsa now has $1,147,761 in 2018 progeny earnings.
