During his successful freshman season last year, Drill's runners stood out among the other first-season Florida sires via a series of victories accomplished by what has long been known in racing circles as 'daylight.' His eight victories by his runners in the United States were achieved by a total of 57 1/2 lengths.
Now, as 3-year-olds, those winners have continued to add to that impressive statistic. Last night, one of Drill's 13 winners this year, Destiny Over Fate, scored a four-length victory in an allowance optional claimer at Mountaineer and gave Drill 16 winning races for the season. The combined winning margins for those 16 races has been an eye-opening 70 3/4 lengths. That's daylight.
Destiny Over Fate, bred by Best A Luck Farm, was a $150,000 OBS April 2-year-old. In a six-furlong race over a sloppy main track (originally scheduled for the turf), she raced between horses until the turn, then put the field away with a strong run through the stretch to gain her third career victory. The $11,716 winner's check increased her earnings to $80,894.
