Despite his sharp runner-up finish by a neck on Jan. 9, Drilliant was allowed to go off at 7-1 in a $32,000 maiden claimer on the grass at Tampa Bay Downs yesterday. Pedro Cotto Jr. made the non-believers pay for their mistake. Cotto waited patiently near the rear of the pack with the 3-year-old colt by Drill, not making his move until they turned for home. He angled off the rail in upper stretch and blew by the field, drawing off to score by 1 1/4 lengths and paying $16.80. Drilliant was a $15,000 OBS Winter Mixed Sale purchase, and became Drill's third winner of 2019, earning a check of $9,020 for owner Wimborne Farm.
