A pair of fillies took care of business with wire-to-wire victories against odds-on favorites and have become the 15th and 16th winners for Drill this year.
The 2-year-old Nite Brite was 20-1 under Arienne Cox in a $30,000 maiden special at Presque Isle Downs, and, oddly enough, she led by one length at every call, including at the wire. She was clocked in :58.70 for the five furlongs and collected a check for $18,000 while posting a 73 best-ever 'E' speed figure. The 3/5 favored entry finished third and fourth.
At Fort Erie, Awesome Drill broke her maiden in her fourth start in a race that was scheduled for the grass and moved to 1 1/16 miles over the main track. With Kirk Johnson aboard, the 3-year-old filly led by four lengths at the quarter, five at the half, and three at the three-quarters. She then coasted home by two lengths over the 7/10 favorite, and paid $15.80.
